Q & A - “Sustainability and Tourists Gaze”, lecture 7 of International WEB Lecture Series in Tourism and Hospitality

Question and Answer Session was conducted during 4th lecture organized on 13th May 2020 by the experts Prof. Parikshat Singh Manhas and Dr. Puveneswaran Kunasekaran. Some of the questions remained unanswered during the lecture here are the replies to those questions:

 

Q1. What would be the benefit of creating local infrastructure in terms of the tourism building in post covid?

Answer: During Post Covid era, when governments try to divert tourists to new destinations, infrastructure can be developed in the local area. These infrastructures developed for tourism can be also used by the local people.

Q2. What model is the sustainable development components based? (Dr. Daryl Ace Cornell, Faculty Researcher, Polytechnic University of the Philippines)

Answer: The sustainable development model is based on Brruntland Commission (1987), three pillars of sustainability.

Q3. Do you think there would be issues on environmental sustainability as because of the pandemic we are     utilizing more and more chemicals for hygienic use against COVID19? (Dr. Daryl Ace Cornell, Faculty Researcher, Polytechnic University of the Philippines)

Answer: Yes, there is a concern on this but sanitization is the top priority and theses chemicals are critically needed. This scenario can be improved if any organic sanitization method is found.

Q4. Future of mass tourism post covid?

Answer: Mass tourism will still be active but at least for two years, people will try to avoid crowded destinations. This may reduce mass tourism in short term.

Q5. How to control the gaze 3.0 and over tourism?

Answer: This pandemic can be treated as a pause button for Gaze 3.0, UNWTO can advice strict social distancing and carrying capacity measures to control over tourism permanently.

Q6.  What will be the role of local community in sustaining tourism after the pandemic?

Answer: Local communities have to create trust to the market that they are hygienic and clean. This will make the tourists to visit them.

Q7. Career prospects in tourism sector post covid?

Answer: In the field of Smart tourism, solo tourism, virtual tourism, risk management

Q8. The environment is healing itself during this pandemic, the ozone is healing itself, the rivers are clean, and the weather is fixing itself.

Answer: Agreed.

Q9. Is it possible tourism industry take biggest growth in future as comparing previous position?

Answer: Yes, definitely, history has proved that. However, systematic recovery plan of governing bodies will determine the speed of the industry growth.

Q10. What can be the government promotional activities to gain the tourists even in this pandemic period?

Answer: Government can provide travel vouchers for domestic traveling post Covid. For instance, the Malaysian government has announced to give RM100 per person to travel to local destinations after Covid 19.
