Q & A - “The Key to Success in a Post Covid-19 World” International Web Lecture Series in Tourism and Hospitality (Lecture 15)
Question and Answer Session was conducted during 15th lecture organized on 13th June 2020 by the experts Prof. Parikshat Singh Manhas and Dr. Andy Nazarechuk. Some of the questions remained unanswered during the lecture here are the replies to those questions:
Q1. In your opinion was it the right time to open the hotels for the guests as cases are rising every day with special reference to India and USA?
Answer: We cannot keep our industry closed indefinitely. The economic impact is too great. Hotels, restaurants, and other businesses need to start reopening slowly and carefully. New practices must be put into place that will reduce the risk of catching the virus for both the customers and the staff. With enhanced cleaning, more touchless operations, social distancing, and contact tracing we can reopen. The responsibility will fall on owners and managers to establish policies and procedures. They must also be willing to invest in training their staff so that everyone knows that “doing things the right way” is more important than ever before. Short term thinking will result in long term loses.
Q2. Do you think artificial intelligence will play a big role post covid 19 in the service industry?
Answer: Artificial Intelligence will definitely play a role in the future service industry. Reservations, Check in and out, and any automated type of service will be handled by AI. Will this happen as a result of COVID19? There will be a higher sense of urgency in those areas where there is contact between a guest and a staff member. If a hotel can eliminate the front desk operations, they will. While technology use will expand in the future, I believe that our guests will seek the “human touch”. In fact, the human touch may become a sought after competitive amenity in the the future. Of course, only those large multi-national companies will be able to afford such technology and it will be a long time before it becomes affordable for the smaller hotels or restaurants.
Q3. Kindly suggest any important piece of advice to the young hoteliers working in the industry?
Answer: The hospitality industry, in the future, will be seeking a different type of employee. As experienced by the current COVID19 crises, everyday will present new challenges. Those employees and managers who can, not only identify and understand the issue, but who can quickly adapt new solutions to resolve issues will be in high demand. Students today must learn the industry, but also must develop their own critical thinking skills. They must see beyond the textbook and combine everything they have learned with their own experience, and be unafraid to implement new ideas.
Q4. What are your suggestions regarding the ‘’Home delivery post covid will be the new normal’’?
Answer: Home delivery services will expand in the future. Will it replace restaurants or other activities, I don’t think so. Until society is comfortable and confident in going out then home delivery will be popular. But, once a vaccine is developed, or the virus fades away on its own, people will look forward to going out. In today’s, experience based world, sitting at home, most of the time, is not going to a popular way to live. There are certain risks we take everyday we go out, car accidents, theft, random issues with bacteria and other viruses, and we adjust our personal actions to minimize the risk so we can enjoy our lives to the best of our abilities.

Q & A - Lecture 14 “Transacting Skill Development Programme through Online Preparing for New Normals & Understanding” & “Navigating the F&B Business 2021- Thriving in the Post COVID-19, New Normal”
Question and Answer Session was conducted during 14th lecture organized on 6th June 2020 by the experts Prof. Parikshat Singh Manhas, Professor Sitansu Sekhar Jena and Dr. Mayukh Dewan. Some of the questions remained unanswered during the lecture here are the replies to those questions:
Q1. Can virtual internship replace the actual industry internship?
Answer: In many types of jobs like accounting or business management, virtual internships can definitely replace actual industry experience but when it comes to the hospitality business it may not be possible as we are a customer centric and customer focused business where in face-to-face interaction is of prime importance .Just as we discussed in the webinar, it is suggested that students and educational institutions could defer industry placements and internships for students for at least a period of six months starting July 2020. this gives enough time for the hotels to recoup some of their business , rehire some of their staff as required , get there SOPs in place and then focus towards young interns coming and working with them.
Q2. What is your take on the latest SOP’s for hotels, restaurants and Malls?
Answer: All hotels , restaurants, retail services and malls are coming up with SOPs. I have had the opportunity of seeing quite detailed and watertight SOPs, especially in the hotel business. now how effective these SOPs are it depends on the implementation and strict monitoring off the same by all these outlets.
Q3. As people are scared of moving out, how to lure them again to visit the restaurants and hotels?
Answer:Whenever any kind of marketing strategy is employed by the hotel and restaurant business it focuses on the customers immediate need and requirements. for example, for a college student who has dearth of disposable income, discounts and buy-one-free-one meals really attract . in the present scenario where almost everybody’s needs are health, hygiene and safety from cross-contamination , the hotel and restaurant business can hope to sustain itself by proving to the customers that their health and safety standards and SOPs are in place . all marketing activities should focus more on this rather than cost, value and presentation of the food and beverages.
Q4. My question to Dr. Mayukh Dewan Sir, What is the main purpose of the topic Understanding and Navigating the food service& Accommodation operation Business in 2021?
Answer: Now this one is quite self-explanatory . the main purpose of the webinar was to understand the current situation in the hospitality and restaurant business. only after we understand the current situation , we can aim to navigate the unwholesome and difficult situation. we also need to understand ,comprehend and evaluate what hotels and restaurants are doing in other parts of the world. this helps us make informed decisions with our own industry in India .

Q & A - “Heritage Tourism- How to Turn the Crisis into Opportunity” Lecture 12 - International Web Lecture Series in Tourism and Hospitality
Question and Answer Session was conducted during 12th lecture organized on 30th May 2020 by the experts Prof. Parikshat Singh Manhas and Dr Hassan Refaat . Some of the questions remained unanswered during the lecture here are the replies to those questions:
Q1. How sustainable tourism can begin uprooting this epidemic?
Answer: Sustainable tourism practices can be a very effective tool that to support the recovery of the business and at the same time will help in not spreading out the pandemic but it will not be able to uprooting the epidemic as the only issue that will uprooting this epidemic is to come up with a Vaccine or a drug for this epidemic
Q2. Future of Mass tourism after the outbreak?
Answer: Hygiene, Safety and security are now considered the key words for tourism sector and even post-coronavirus phase, mass tourism will minimize the chances and competitive advantage of the destination simply because mass tourism is competing over numbers. Mass tourism will go against one of the most important percussions that has been adopted to avoid spreading out Coronavirus which is to keep the social distancing, and with mass tourism of course it is difficult for the customers to keep the social distance. This means that the destination will lose it competitive advantage and this will make the majority of the tourism destination all over the world to start thinking to promote alternative tourism style that define sustainability and quality as priorities. Especially if we take into consideration that the behavior of the tourists will be totally different after Covid 19, There are significant search volumes for phrases like “off the beaten path” and “alternative” destinations, “hidden gems” and “undiscovered” paradises” . This give us a clear evidence that there will be less interest to promote mass tourism
Q3. Can heritage tourism help in achieving sustainability in tourism at regional level?
Answer: Yes of course, because Heritage tourism Defines sustainability as a priority, as it take into consideration the social and economic benefits of the local community, the experience of the visitors as well as making a positive contributions to the conservation of the natural and cultural resources
Q4. How to optimize the carrying capacity after the Covid?
Answer: We have to set the rules and regulations that enable us to maintain the carrying capacity of a destination or a site like for example:
· Increase prices
· Limiting access to a particular time
· Limit some activities
· Limiting parking time
· Publicize alternative sites
· And of course we have to do research to determine the optimum carrying capacity for each destination and attraction.
Q5. What marketing strategies can be adopted to promote less popular areas?
Answer: The most important issues when it comes to the less known destination is to spread more information about it in order to generate demand on these less-known attractions and increasing its publicity . then the two marketing strategies can be used for marketing these less know attraction which are the P2P where we market these attractions through the tour operators and travel agencies as well as P2C where we Market it to the customers directly. I think the virtual reality guided tours are very effective tool to spread information about these attractions and increase it publicity which will increase the demand on these less know attractions when this situation is over.
Q6. In many countries like India, where people are reluctant to follow COVID safety rules? How can destinations manage these type of tourists who are mostly domestic in nature?
Answer: Awareness and regulations, as we have to aware the locals about how important to follow COVID 19 safety measures through the traditional media as well as through social media. The second issue that we have to do is to put the regulations and make sure that it has to be applied so for example we can set the rules that permit the entry to the touristic places for those persons who are wearing face masks
Q7. At a place as Agra where it's hard for people to follow covid19 norms, will the heritage tourism at my place especially Taj Mahal will be affected? Please mention New Normal keeping in mind the local people?
Answer : Any destination that won't take all the measures to ensure that all the safety measures are applied will be negatively affected as the tourists will never think to travel to a destination (regardless how famous is the this destination) where the infection possibility is high . as I have mentioned the Hygiene , safety and security are the key words for tourism business during the post Coronavirus phase. The destination has to inform the tour operators and travel agencies as well as the end customers about the safety measures that has been taken to reassure them and create a demand on the destination. it is needed also has to run a campaign to raise the awareness of the local community about the safety measures that have to be followed and on the other hand to take all the steps to ensure the adherence to these regulations
