Question and Answer Session was conducted during 14th lecture organized on 6th June 2020 by the experts Prof. Parikshat Singh Manhas, Professor Sitansu Sekhar Jena and Dr. Mayukh Dewan. Some of the questions remained unanswered during the lecture here are the replies to those questions:
Q1. Can virtual internship replace the actual industry internship?
Answer: In many types of jobs like accounting or business management, virtual internships can definitely replace actual industry experience but when it comes to the hospitality business it may not be possible as we are a customer centric and customer focused business where in face-to-face interaction is of prime importance .Just as we discussed in the webinar, it is suggested that students and educational institutions could defer industry placements and internships for students for at least a period of six months starting July 2020. this gives enough time for the hotels to recoup some of their business , rehire some of their staff as required , get there SOPs in place and then focus towards young interns coming and working with them.
Q2. What is your take on the latest SOP’s for hotels, restaurants and Malls?
Answer: All hotels , restaurants, retail services and malls are coming up with SOPs. I have had the opportunity of seeing quite detailed and watertight SOPs, especially in the hotel business. now how effective these SOPs are it depends on the implementation and strict monitoring off the same by all these outlets.
Q3. As people are scared of moving out, how to lure them again to visit the restaurants and hotels?
Answer:Whenever any kind of marketing strategy is employed by the hotel and restaurant business it focuses on the customers immediate need and requirements. for example, for a college student who has dearth of disposable income, discounts and buy-one-free-one meals really attract . in the present scenario where almost everybody’s needs are health, hygiene and safety from cross-contamination , the hotel and restaurant business can hope to sustain itself by proving to the customers that their health and safety standards and SOPs are in place . all marketing activities should focus more on this rather than cost, value and presentation of the food and beverages.
Q4. My question to Dr. Mayukh Dewan Sir, What is the main purpose of the topic Understanding and Navigating the food service& Accommodation operation Business in 2021?
Answer: Now this one is quite self-explanatory . the main purpose of the webinar was to understand the current situation in the hospitality and restaurant business. only after we understand the current situation , we can aim to navigate the unwholesome and difficult situation. we also need to understand ,comprehend and evaluate what hotels and restaurants are doing in other parts of the world. this helps us make informed decisions with our own industry in India .
